Distress

How a Urinalysis Is Done

          In most cases, urine is collected in a clean container, then a plastic stick that has patches of chemicals on it (the dipstick) is placed in the urine. The patches change color to indicate things like the presence of glucose or white blood cells.
         The doctor or laboratory technologist also usually examines the urine under a microscope to check for other substances that indicate different conditions.
         If a urinalysis shows white blood cells and bacteria — which may mean that there's an infection in the kidneys or the bladder — the doctor may decide to send the urine to a lab for a urine culture to identify bacteria that may be causing the infection.
          Getting a urine sample. It can be difficult to get urine samples from kids to analyze for a possible infection. That's because the skin around the urinary opening normally is home to some of the same bacteria that cause infections in the urinary tract. If these bacteria contaminate the urine, the doctors may not be able to use the sample to tell if there is an infection or not.
          To avoid this, the skin surrounding the urinary opening has to be cleaned and rinsed immediately before the urine is collected. In this "clean-catch" method, the patient (or parent) cleans the skin around the urinary opening. The child then urinates, stops momentarily (if the child is old enough to cooperate), then urinates again into the collection container. Catching the urine in "midstream" is the goal.

Bone age study (2)

          The bone age study can help evaluate how fast or slowly a child's skeleton is maturing, which can help doctors diagnose conditions that delay or accelerate physical growth and development. This test is usually ordered by pediatricians or pediatric endocrinologists.
Bone age can be used to predict:
· how much time a child will be growing
· when a child will enter puberty
· what the child's ultimate height will be
The test is also used to monitor progress and guide treatment of kids with conditions that affect growth. Conditions for which a doctor will usually check and track a child's bone age include:
· diseases that affect the levels of hormones involved in growth, such as growth hormone deficiency, hypothyroidism, precocious puberty, and adrenal gland disorders

          A bone age study can help doctors estimate the maturity of a child's skeletal system. It's usually done by taking a single X-ray of the left wrist, hand, and fingers. It is a safe and painless procedure that uses a small amount of radiation. The bones on the X-ray image are compared with X-rays images in a standard atlas of bone development, which is based on data from large numbers of other kids of the same gender and age.
       A child's bones, such as those in the fingers and wrist, contain "growing zones" at both ends called growth plates. These plates consist of special cells responsible for the bones' growth in length. Growth plates are easy to spot on an X-ray because they're softer and contain less mineral, making them appear darker on an X-ray image than the rest of the bone.
      
        As kids grow, growth plates change in appearance on the X-ray images and become thinner, eventually disappearing (this is what is called "closed growth plates"). Because they look different at each age, a doctor can assign a bone age based on the appearance of the bones and growth plates. A child's bone age (also called the skeletal age) is assigned by determining which of the standard X-ray images in the atlas most closely match the appearance of the child's bones on the X-ray.
      A difference between a child's bone age and his or her chronological age might indicate a growth problem. But such differences don't always mean there's a problem, because perfectly healthy kids can have bone ages that differ from their chronological ages.

X Ray Exam:Humerus(Upper Arm)

What It IsAn X ray of the humerus is a safe and painless test that uses a small amount of radiation (by mobile x ray machine or stationary x ray machine) to make images of the upper arm (between the shoulder and elbow). During the examination, an  X ray machine sends a beam of radiation through the upper arm, and an image is recorded on a computer or special film. This image shows the soft tissues and the bone in the upper arm, which is called the humerus.

CR and DR triumph over conventional techniques (2)

             CR was the first digital radiographic technique to be introduced. Systems are based on an
imaging plate that is similar to the amplifier screen of a conventional radiography unit. The
difference is that this storage phosphor imaging plate retains information from incident
photons as a latent image. This image can then be retrieved following stimulation by a readout
laser.
             The first CR systems required more dose than screen-film systems to achieve a similar clinical
performance. But these systems did allow the radiation dose to be varied. This meant that the
dose could be reduced substantially in situations where reduced image quality was acceptable.
             Continuous improvements to the detector material and readout technology have led to substantial
gains in dose efficiency and enhanced spatial resolution. Innovations include dual readout
technology and needle-crystalline detectors. The dose efficiency of CR systems is now
approaching that of DR (mobile x ray machine) systems.

What It Is
